Problem Printing from MapGuide with Internet Explorer 8

A very few users have reported problems printing from MapGuide with Internet Explorer 8. (No users have reported printing problems with Internet Explorer 9 yet, but it's possible.) Users may receive a pop-up message saying "An error occurred during this operation" or other printing failure with certain applications, including MapGuide. Testing has shown that this error may occur when Internet Explorer 8 is running in "Internet Explorer Protected Mode".

Probable solutions

• See Printing the Displayed Map to be sure you are printing with MapGuide's printing features.

• Adding our site to Internet Explorer's list of Trusted sites and lowering security settings for our site has been found to fix this Internet Explorer 8 printing problem. To try this solution:

  Open the Internet Explorer Tools menu Security tab as follows:

  1. Pick Internet Explorer's Tools menu
  2. Pick Internet Options to open the Internet Options dialog box.
  3. Pick the Security tab.

  In the Security tab:

  1. Pick the Trusted sites icon
  2. Pick the Sites button to open the Trusted sites dialog box.
  3. Make sure the checkbox "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" is not checked.
  4. Enter *.pima.gov under "Add this website to the zone:", being sure to include the asterisk in the site name exactly as shown.
  5. Pick the Add button and see *.pima.gov listed under Websites in the dialog box.
  6. Pick the Close button to close the Trusted sites dialog box.
  7. Ensure that the "Security levels for this zone:" slider control is set to Medium or lower. (If you see "Custom" instead of the slider control, see additional steps below.)
  8. Click OK to close the Internet options dialog box.
  9. Close all open Internet Explorer windows and open a new browser session.

  Test again. If it still fails, then try resetting the security settings for the Trusted sites zone to a lower setting:

  1. Open the Internet Explorer's Internet Options dialog box Security tab as explained above and pick the Security tab.
  2. Pick the Trusted sites icon
  3. Move the "Security levels for this zone:" slider to Medium-low or Low
  4. Click OK to close the Internet options dialog box.
  5. Close all open Internet Explorer windows and open a new browser session.

  If in the steps above you see "Custom" rather than the slider control to change the security levels, then reset the custom settings to the default Medium, Medium-low or Low as follows:

  1. Open the Internet Explorer's Internet Options dialog box Security tab as explained above and pick the Security tab.
  2. Pick the Trusted sites icon
  3. Pick "Custom level..."
  4. Look near the bottom of the "Security Settings - Trusted Sites Zone" dialog box.
  5. Under "Reset custom settings" ensure that "Reset to:" is set to Medium (default), Medium-low or Low as desired
  6. Pick the "Reset..." button
  7. Pick "Yes" in response to the "Are you sure you want to change the settings for this zone?" warning.
  8. Click OK to close the "Security Settings - Trusted Sites Zone" dialog box.
  9. Verify the desired Medium, Medium-low or Low security level setting of the Security level slider control.
  10. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
  11. Close all open Internet Explorer windows and open a new browser session.

Other possible, but unlikely, solutions

• It's been reported that the Microsoft Inventory Analyzer (MSIA) causes problems printing with Internet Explorer 8. We don't know yet if MSIA is related to the MapGuide problem, but it could be.

  MSIA is generally not used on home computers, but it could be. If your computer belongs to an organization with a many computers, then MSIA could be on your computer.

  • If you are having difficulty, Microsoft recommends uninstalling MSIA. (You can temporarily reinstall MSIA if you need to use it.) Use the Add or Remove Programs option in Control panel to look for and uninstall the Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer software.
  • If it is not listed, then open the Windows File Explorer and navigate to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer" and verify that the folder is not there. If it does NOT exist this means that either MSIA was never installed or that it was already uninstalled.
  • If you have MSIA installed on your system it should be listed in the Uninstall or Change a Program list. If it is not listed, then open Explorer and navigate to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer" and verify that the folder exists. If it does NOT exist this means that either MSIA was never installed or that it was already uninstalled. If a "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer" still exists, there is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article where you can download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. If the MSIA was uninstalled and remnants of the install remain, this utility allows you to completely remove them. Use this Windows Installer Cleanup Utility at your own risk!

• Update your printer driver to the latest revision to see if that helps.

• Try printing to another printer to see if this resolves the problem.

• Downgrade Internet Explorer 8 back to Internet Explorer 7. This may sound like an unreasonable solution. However it is supported by information in the press suggesting Internet Explorer 8 has general printing problems across multiple applications.

At this point, these options are all we can suggest. We don't know if or when Microsoft will address the printing issues with Internet Explorer 8. As we learn more or have other suggestions for solutions or workarounds we will post them on this page.
