QuickTime Interferes with TIFF Viewing!
Installing Apple's
QuickTime
overrides your existing installed TIFF viewing software.
Apparently QuickTime handles some TIFF variants, but it does not handle
most of the common bitonal (black and white) TIFF formats on a PC.
Worse, you install QuickTime for it's capability to view other types of multimedia images
and it unexpectedly trashes your existing TIFF viewing setup.
This is the case on PCs. Macintoshes may be different.
Un-associating QuickTime with TIFF Images
It may be possible to disable QuickTime's grip on TIFF images
if you have QuickTime version 4 or later.
If you want to try this, see the Apple Knowledge Base article 36508
QuickTime 4: Customizing MIME Type Assignments for QuickTime Plug-in.
The QuickTime notes from the AlternaTIFF folks
have detailed instructions for telling QuickTime not to handle TIFF files.
Ken Seasholes of Arizona Department of Water Resources explains this QuickTime adjustment a bit more succinctly:
Un-associating QuickTime with TIF/TIFF is actually relatively straightforward, though not intuitive.
You launch the QuickTime Player from the Start menu.
Then 'Edit', 'Preferences', 'QuickTime Preferences...'.
From the drop-down list choose 'Browser Plug-in' then click on the 'MIME Settings...' button.
Scroll down to 'Images,' expand the list, then uncheck 'TIFF image file.'
We suggest removing QuickTime entirely.
Unfortunately, using the Add/Remove Software Control Panel to remove QuickTime
does not remove the plug-in causing TIFF viewing problems.
Removing QuickTime for Internet Explorer
- Use the Add/Remove Software Control Panel to remove QuickTime as explained
by the Apple knowledge base article 60342 QuickTime: How to Uninstall QuickTime on a Windows-Compatible Computer.
-
Use Windows Start, Find, Files or Folders... to locate all
files on your hard disk named npqtplugin*.* (typically npqtplugin.dll, npqtplugin2.dll and npqtplugin3.dll).
They will probably be in the Plugins folder of your Internet Explorer installation.
- Exit all Internet Explorer windows and delete the plug-in files identified above.
- Re-boot the computer.
- Start Internet Explorer and test TIFF viewing.
If TIFF images are not displayed, re-install your TIFF viewing software.
Removing QuickTime for Netscape
- Use the Add/Remove Software Control Panel to remove QuickTime.
- In Netscape, select the Help, then About Plug-ins menu options.
It will show you the QuickTime plug-in files handling TIFF, including the file locations.
- Exit all Netscape windows and delete the plug-in files identified above.
(These files are probably named npqtplugin.dll, npqtplugin2.dll and npqtplugin3.dll.)
- Restart Netscape and test TIFF viewing.
If TIFF images are not displayed, re-install your TIFF viewing software.
