Abstract:

Fire History polygons represent the final mapped wildfire perimeter. Only fires 10 acres or larger in size will be included in the feature class fire_history_pl. All fires will be included in the point feature class (fire_history_pt). The tracking of prescribed fires is an optional use These data are maintained at the Forest / District level to track the area affected by fire. The time span represented in the feature class should be as complete as possible. For the USDA Forest Service Southwest Region, this is defined as a minimum of twenty years. Accuracy and completeness of the attributes was checked by manually comparing attributes and locations of the fire history point layer which was derived from the firestat database in Kansas City. As the polygons were drawn on to hardcopy maps, they were coded with a number that referenced the firestat database. Most of the attibuting on the Fire History Polygon layer was derived from the Fire History Point layer. All the data fields were built in accordance with 2004 National and Regional data standards as per 2004 spatial data dictionary. All attibuting and attribute checking was done in ARCMAP and/or ARCVIEW.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

The topological integrity of the data is based on the feature class model. All polygons and features in the original region sublcass for region.fire were based on the Southwest Region Three standards for Fire History. In this layer these features are 10 acres in size or bigger.

Completeness_Report:

This data is based on the Southwest Region Three data standards published by the GIS Unit, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Data was derived based on paper maps, GPS collected data, and previously digitized shapefiles and coverages. The Region 3 Fire Digitizer Tool version 2.0 was used in ArcMap to build individual shapefiles for each fire. The Fire Digitizer Tool is an ArcGIS .dll created to assist heads up digitizing and attributing fire history points and polygons. The tool automates the background layers used and attribute entry, and the data created by this project are compliant with Region Three and National Data Standards. It was created by Rick Crawford of the SouthWest Regional office and can be found at the R3 website at <http://fsweb.r3.fs.fed.us/eng/gis/arcgis.html>. These individual shapefiles were then appended to the corporate layer. Some of the techniques used for older paper maps were scanning and georeferencing to digital raster graphics and softcopy tif images of the Cibola Single Edition Quads.

Edition Series (SES) map is a raster image of the USDA Forest Service topographic map, including the collar information, georeferenced to the UTM grid. It is very similar to the Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) product. The image is generated from the digital file; it is not scanned, except for the contours. It is an automatic by-product of the production process of the Single Edition Quad (SEQ). There are two versions of the file, one with full map collar, and one clipped at the neat line. The files are in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF), and can be displayed and manipulated in ARC/INFO, ArcView, ArcExplorer, and other commonly used graphics software packages.

Forest fire staff provided paper hardcopy data (polygon format) was used to create this feature class. The hardcopy was completed when fire occurred. A record of fire history has been kept for all fires starting with 1970 from fire reports. That data is in the form of computer database, frequently referred to as the Kansas City database because that is where it is housed. This database contains basic information about fires including some information about the location. In this database the early fire locations (before 1985) have latitude and longitude for location. The FS has taken this tabular database and created point features for the fire history point feature class. The points are derived from two methods (manuscripts and KC database). The latitude, longitude data was mappped to X,Y locations. The township, range section data was mapped to the center of each section. These two methods were put together to create one point feature class of the fire points for the entire forest. Source and method were populated for all points. In most cases, the fire history polygon data derived from fire report maps. The maps are hard copy at various scales and quality. If there were some missing hardcopy maps, the perimeter was estimated from the point. The process to create fire history polygon feature class is either manuscripting or heads-up digitizing. The data set was checked for dangle and label errors. Any errors were corrected and topology built for polygon and arc. Attributes were populated based on information needed to form the National Data Standard.
