Abstract:
This file represents the final version of an assessment of the extent and distribution of grassland types in the Apache Highlands Ecoregion as indicated by expert interviews and field verification. Coverage includes portions of the state of Arizona, western portion of the state of New Mexico, and the northern portion of Sonora, Mexico.
Purpose:
The purpose of this coverage was to fill a significant data gap by identifing the remaining high quality and shrub-invaded grasslands found within the Apache Highlands Ecoregion.

HISTORY: On hard copy maps comprised of 1:250k digital raster graphs (DRGs) overlain with GAP vegetation associations for Arizona and New Mexico, grassland/range experts marked the ecoregion's current and historical grasslands, including their relative condition to the best of the expert's knowledge. Note that some experts provided additional digital data sets at scales ranging between 1:24k and 1:250k. Experts were encouraged to use the GAP vegetation overlay as a guide but to base their mapping and type assignments on personal experience. The resulting expert polygons were digitized in ArcView and were then verified in the field. Field-based modifications were incorporated by intersecting the original expert polygon files with a hexagon-shaped grid surface at a resolution of 50 ha. After all field-verified modifications were implemented, the hexagon shape files were dissolved using ArcView's Patch Analyst to generate continuous polygons of like grassland types for each expert; the resultant files were then merged together to create the full grassland coverage for the U.S. portion of the Apache Highlands Ecoregion. The Mexico portion was generated by IMADES using satellite imagery and field experts. The final Mexico layer was merged with the U.S. portion to create a map of the current and former grasslands of the Apache Highlands Ecoregion.
